Alvin Schmaier, M.D., appointed chief of hematology/oncology at UHC, professor of medicine at Case

CLEVELAND (Sept. 29, 2005) – Alvin H. Schmaier, M.D., has been appointed chief of the hematology and oncology division in the Department of Medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland and a professor of medicine at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

“Dr. Schmaier brings a wealth of experience to this role, having served as professor of internal medicine and pathology at the University of Michigan and as director of the coagulation laboratory in the Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan Health System,” said Richard Walsh, M.D., chair of the UHC Department of Medicine.

As chief of hematology and oncology, Schmaier will assist Stan Gerson, M.D., director of the Ireland Cancer Center and the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, in faculty recruitment and plans to develop programs that will contribute to the basic and translational research activities of the cancer center.

Schmaier earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond. He then served an internship and residency in internal medicine at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, followed by a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and a research fellowship at the Specialized Center for Thrombosis Research at the Temple University School of Medicine.

Schmaier became an assistant professor in Temple’s Department of Medicine in 1980. He left in 1991 as a professor to join the faculty at the University of Michigan’s departments of internal medicine and pathology. There, he also served as director of the M2 hematology sequence.

Schmaier’s basic research efforts examine the influence of the kallikrein/kinin system on vascular biology and its relation to blood pressure regulation and thrombosis. His translational research interests are in anticoagulant development of selective thrombin and thrombin receptor activation antagonists for treatment of cardiovascular disease and cancer. He is the founder and CEO of Thromgen, Inc., Ann Arbor, Mich.

Schmaier is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the American Association of Physicians. He is the author of more than 170 publications (105 peer-reviewed) and one book and holds eight patents. His practice is exclusively limited to hemostasis and thrombosis and anticoagulant management.
