DESCRIPTION : Chronically ill children require coordinated specialized health care which should be provided in a cohesive manner by an integrated group of physicians and dedicated health care providers. To fully appreciate the complexity of these children's needs, a thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of their disease must be gained. The pathologic basis, immunologic approach, and the genetic breakthroughs of the more common pediatric chronic diseases will be covered in this area of concentration. Medical students will be exposed to research and novel investigative techniques being used at the medical school which help in the study of important aspects of chronic disease states. In addition to learning about the delivery of medical care to these children, psychosocial issues will be included in order to provide another crucial perspective on the care of these children. Supervised independent research on chronically ill children and their families will be encouraged.
